Stunning coastal geographic location

Seward Alaska is a coastal community located at the entrance of Kenai Fjords National Park. A hub of mountain, ocean, and ice that attracts visitors from around the world. The beauty of Seward is wild and dramatic with its rugged coastline, panoramic mountains, and lush forestry. Situated on Resurrection Bay, this deep, ice-free bay supports fishing, tourism, research, shipping, and recreation creating a diverse community bonded over a love of nature.

Rich Maritime and Waterfront Community Heritage

Seward’s history is deeply tied to the water. Resurrection Bay is deep and ice-free which has served as a way of access and economic success for thousands of years. Seward’s region was originally inhabited by the Aluutiq and Sugpiaq people, now formally known as The Qutekcak Tribe. The land and sea were used as an active trading post. These Native Alaskans were the original stewards of the land where sustenance practices of hunting, fishing, and gathering not only kept them alive, but served as vehicles for the rich art and culture they carry.

In the late 1700’s, Russian explorers claimed the bay as an outpost. Alaska was purchased from the Russians by the United Stated in 1867 led by William H. Seward. Alaska’s rich resources needed a route for transportation, so when the Alaska Central Railway needed a starting point, Seward’s ice-free bay became the hub once again. Since then Seward has grown into a hub for recreational and tourist attracting boat tours, research vessels, and commercial fishing boats, which all support the growing economy.

Outdoor recreation & natural attractions

Seward is surrounded by ocean and mountain line making it an adult playground. In many other Alaskan communities, trails are located miles away from town. Seward’s trails are extremely accessible, some even walkable from downtown. Mount Marathon, the 3,033 ft. mountain sits tall right on the edge of Seward. This steep mountain holds deep history. One of the oldest foot races in the U.S. is held on the Fourth of July right in the center of town, where brave athletes race to the top of the mountain. David Norris holds the fastest time at just over 40 minutes! Seward’s recreation is diverse! There are short and easy hikes for families of all ages, and there are steep treacherous terrains for adrenaline lovers alike. There are also trails for everyone in between.

Situated on Resurrection Bay, the sea life is flourishing, therefore so are all the natural attractions. Take a boat or kayak out to one of the many beautiful coves where you are sure to see sea birds, star fish, otters, mussels, whales, and so much more! Seward is also accessible to people who are new to outdoor recreation, with many guided excursions such as charter fishing, wildlife cruises, hiking, kayaking, etc.
